Calling all winos!

I'm conducting a poll on wine...yum!
I am trying to introduce a larger variety of wine into our household. I received a wine journal for Christmas from my friend, Holly, and I have had such fun trying new stuff and filling it out.

WEG and I's favorite wine on a budget is Folie a Deux's Menage a Trois red blend. We LOVE it and it's only $8-9 at a discount beverage store like Total Wine. We also love Ravenswood Zen of Zin and Seaven Deadly Zins, to name a few.

We really don't drink much white wine, but if we do it's Pinot Grigio. I absolutely do not like chardonnay or merlot, but a blend with merlot in it is okay.

So, based on my wine preferences, what do you girls suggest?? If you know the price, include that, too. I found a few good wines the other day at World Market and all were under $10.
Now, I can't wait to get a glass of wine this evening!!

  1. I love Malbec. It is a really tastey variety of red. There are quite a few varieties at Total Wine.

  2. Carmenere was my favorite! Specifically Casillero Del Diablo....typically costs less than $10.00 :0)

  3. I love Shiraz, it's my favorite red wine, and I like Fat Bastard and Yellow Tail for a cheaper version.....

  4. The only thing I know about wine is whether or not I think it tastes good....sorry, I'm no help on this one!

  5. Well, now that I've read this post, I am going to pour a glass for me!! I l-o-v-e Hogue Late Harvest White Riesling. Umm perhaps around $12 a bottle - honestly I am drawing a blank on the price...may not even be that much!!

  6. If you want a new varietal to try, I love Sangiovese. I am a fan of zin, pinot noir, and cabs for red, but Sangiovese is my fav of all reds. My faves range between $12-$20. I have found that anything over $30 doesn't taste much different than those around $20. I prefer Savignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio for whites.

Bear's Lair Cabernet is my favorite, "go to" cheap red. I can get it at Trader Joes for $4.99/bottle. I also really like their Chardonnay (and I don't prefer Chardonnay normally at all!!). I've had a lot of people who also don't like Chardonnay say the same thing. It must be made in steel drums rather than oak b/c there's no oaky taste at all. J.Lohr's Chardonnay is the only other Chard that I really like. It's great with a cheese tray for a party! I love it with a good block of parm.

I've found that Oregon Reislings are really good without being too sickly sweet like some reislings are. The Pacific Rim Reisling at TJ's is quite good. Ecco Domini's pinot grigio is a great basic to have around during the summer months.

Ruffino's Chianti is an excellent wine. It's around $20 not on sale at any local grocery store or wine store. I love it- very full bodied. If you are making a great hearty italian meal at home with a meat sauce, it's a great compliment. Definitely worth the money! You may be able to find it on sale, and if you like it, buy two. I don't see it on sale around here often.

I walk into wine stores all the time and ask for whatever I'm looking for....."a bottle of savingnon blanc around $10-$15 that I can serve with x or a great red for drinking at home before we go out to a restaurant" and I've rarely been disappointed. Especially if you can tell them 3 or 4 other wines that you really like, most of them can help you to branch out a bit. I think they like the challenge.

I'd love to see you do another wine post in the future! Maybe we could try a different wine every two weeks and report back- I love other people's opinions on this kind of stuff, and I'm always looking for new wines to try! I'm going to get the Hogue this weekend!

  7. Menage a Trois red, white and rose are all the best! Love them! Bogle Chardonnay is also divine.

  8. This is long, I obviously love wine.

David Bruce is hands down the best Pinot Noir I have ever had. It is way pricey though, about $40!! Save that for special occasions.

I second the Shiraz love. Shiraz is yummy and simple to drink. I also love a Petite Syrah, same type of grape as Shiraz. My old Shiraz standby is Rosemont, about $10.

Cabernet – My favorite is Dynamite, it’s about $15 and oh so good!

I have been really pleased with anything from Argentina or New Zealand.

As for whites, I am a Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay drinker. I have found the best way to try a new wine is to read the bottle. If it does not give you a good description, do not buy it. I always go for things with a hint of apples, pears and citrus for a Chardonnay.

Nobilo is a favorite Sauvignon Blanc of mine, it’s about $12.

  9. We love, love, love Malbec. Especially Casillero del Diablo (I see someone mentioned their Carmenere above!) Another good one in the $10 range is Terrazas.
But Malbecs are closer to Merlot than something else. If you like your reds to be sweeter, Pinot Noir might be the way to go.
    Mmmmm....

  10. I love 7 Deadly Zins as well! So good! I am a huge fan of the Castle Rock Pinot Nior. It is only about $10 and smooth and yummy! Good luck!
