Random acts of kindness

Today I went in to my local dry cleaners to pick up a coat that I was having cleaned for my grandmother. The coat had a fur collar and needed to be removed in order to be cleaned and then sewn back on, and my grandmother didn't have a dry cleaner in her little town that she trusted enough to do this. Last week I took the coat in and earlier in the week checked back and it was not ready. So I decided I would go in today to get it. I had gone home for lunch and debated whether I would stop by on my way back in to work or on my way home from work later in the day. I opted to stop right then and walked in, they got the coat for me and I was all set to pay when the owner came from the back.

He told me that today was my lucky day which completely surprised me because I had no idea what he was talking about. Then he proceeded to tell me that I was the 60th customer in there this week to pick up clothing and at the first of the week they had decided that the 60th customer would receive a random act of kindness- aka free dry cleaning. He then went on to say that they didn't ask that I do anything except pass along the random act of kindness to someone else because in this economy in which things are so bleak, if everyone did a random act of kindness for someone else it would make things seem better and improve people's outlooks. (or something to this effect- I'm not quoting word for word because I was generally shocked!)

Well, let me tell you- I will definitely pass along this random act of kindness to someone else. And as WEG said when I told him, karma always comes back around so apparently I have been doing something right!

Anybody else had a random act of kindness bestowed upon them lately? I'd love to hear!

Everybody's Working for the Weekend

Happy Friday everyone!

I am so excited because today I will be going to Charleston for the weekend for my friend Julie's bachelorette party and here is what the weather is shaping up to look like:

Saturday, May 30
High: 87 °F RealFeel®: 90 °F
Mostly sunny
Saturday Night, May 30
Low: 67 °F RealFeel®: 70 °F
Clear

Sunday May 31
High: 88 °F RealFeel®: 92 °F
Sunny
Sunday Night, May 31
Low: 66 °F RealFeel®: 68 °F
Clear and humid

NO RAIN whatsoever in the forecast, just sunny skies and warm temperatures. PERFECT for the beach on Saturday- Hell yeah! After all this rain we have had lately I was skeptical. I can't wait to spend some time with the girls and celebrate Julie's upcoming marriage.

Just a few of the ladies going on the trip: Julie, me, Holly, Shanna.

Although we are going to have a great time, we will definitely be missing our friend Carolyn. Please say a prayer for Carolyn if you get a chance. Her grandmother passed away this morning after battling alzheimer's and a bout with pneumonia. I've mentioned Carolyn on my blog before- she is another one of my friends that is getting married this summer.

Carolyn 2 Christmases ago- I just love the facial expressions she makes for pictures sometimes! :-)

If you are reading, Caro- I love you and I'm thinking about you and your family during this difficult time!
That's all, folks! I hope everyone has the wonderful weather that South Carolina has been promised and gets to enjoy being outdoors!

If you don't like the weather....

Just wait 10 minutes!

That's how it has been here in South Carolina lately.
Take today, for instance. It was pouring down rain when I left on my lunch break- seriously, the National Weather Service had come across the radio and issued a flash flood warning for the county north of here. It looked a bit like this:

I went into Target and the rain was starting to subside, but it was still majorly overcast. I was in Target for a grand total of 15 minutes (seriously shocking in and of itself). I come out and it looks something like this:

Full sun. Steam coming off the pavement- ick! I needed my sunglasses when I came out it was so bright. Who can figure that out?
And what is the weather like now, you ask? Back to overcast and looking like it could rain again at any time.
And this has been the norm for the past few weeks, I feel like. Good ol' SC weather!

Obsess much?

Is there such a thing as being too organized?

I swear I make a list for everything. At work, I usually have multiple lists going- of course I am able to keep up with each list! Whenever I go on a trip, I make a packing list and also a list for things I need to accomplish before we leave for said trip. WEG laughs at me for this, but I generally don't forget anything (except the time we went to Fripp for Valentine's Day and I remembered the Wii and the Wii Fit and the games, but managed to forget the remotes! Everybody has a brain lapse now and again).

Currently, I have lists which include:
  • Packing list for Charleston this weekend
  • Things to accomplish during the week prior to the trip
  • Things to accomplish this week at work
  • List of things to go into work packets
  • Gifts I have to buy in the upcoming months
  • Things to do for a bachelorette party in June
  • Things to do for a bachelorette party in July
  • Things to do for a shower in July
  • List of upcoming purchases I have to make (I have to budget!!)

See, there you go- another list of all my lists.

Some people might say I am obsessive, but I generally get things done and don't leave out important things I need to do or items I need to bring. That's my rationale, anyway.

Perhaps because of my extreme organization, I am already packed for this weekend's trip out of town. I did it yesterday for the most part. Except for items that I will have to pack on Friday morning, everything is in its proper bag and sitting on G-waiting for O. My lists were quite handy, by the way, and I won't be scrambling around on Thursday evening or Friday morning worrying if I am forgetting something.

So ladies, I ask you- are you this organized or do you find my organization a bit obsessive? It's okay, tell me the truth- I can handle it!

Where's Hopsy??

Does anybody know what happened to Hopsy. One day I was reading about her new Sonic drink love and the next she had gone private! How sad :-( Hopsy, if you are reading this- can you pretty please send me an invite so I can continue reading?? My email address is erourk@gmail.com
Thanks!!

Friday tid-bits

Happy Friday, everyone! I'm so ready for the weekend to begin! This will be the first weekend in May that WEG and I actually get to spend together and I'm pretty excited! We don't have any set plans, but we will be working in our yard. I managed to chop down all the limbs off the azalea bushes in front of our house. Now, the base of the shrubs need to come out of the ground so that new bushes can be planted because, right now, it's an eye-sore.
I know there are many of you that probably love azaleas, but I just don't really care for them. Sure, I think they are beautiful when in bloom, but an azalea bush isn't so pretty when it's not blooming which is the majority of the year...and they are high maintenance as far as pruning goes. Plus, our azaleas were scraggly and not full. So they're going and will be replaced by boxwoods or a bush that does not flower! Any suggestions?? Our front yard is fairly shady, so we need something that doesn't need a lot of sunlight.
Anyway, that's our major plan for the weekend. Besides that I am trying to lobby for a nice dinner out to my favorite restaurant, Mr. Friendly's...yum! Check out their menu-mmmm!
In other news, I am going to get new tires today- finally! Since the PepBoys debacle, I haven't had time, but I'm leaving work early today to get it done at a local tire place. My bank account will take a nice little hit, but it has to be done!
I hope everyone has a great weekend- enjoy your long weekend if you get Monday off. I do not have it off, so I will be slaving away at work which seriously sucks. WEG has to work, as well, so I guess it could be worse!
Sorry for no pictures in this post- I didn't have anything that was complimentary to my stories!

Frustrated!

I am completely and utterly frustrated with Google Reader! For the past 2 or 3 days, it has been taking Google Reader up to a day to update that I have a new post. It's so annoying!! Does anybody know how I can remedy this? It's annoying!!

Prayers for Evan

Hi y'all! I'd like to ask everyone to pray for a family that has just had a little baby boy who is currently in the NICU due to breathing problems. They have not been able to pinpoint where the problems are coming from, so, of course, they are uneasy and just having to wonder- which many of you know is worse than knowing what is causing the problem.

Little Evan was born on Friday to John and Amy (Amy is from Elloree, too- her dad is our mayor!) and is the little brother to Thomas and Sarah. If you'd just say a little prayer today for Evan and his family, I'd really appreciate it!

You can visit the blog that Evan's aunt has created to read more or leave a comment:

Thank y'all so much!

They see me rollin'

**ETA: I ended up NOT getting the tires yesterday. PepBoys deal was a crock of royal crap. They failed to tell WEG on the phone when he called that in order to get the 4th tire free, you have to buy the $200 alignment and road hazard plan. Which ends up meaning that you have to pay $70 dollars more to get the "free" tire than if you just bought 4. Because one tire is $130 so it doesn't really compute- especially when I don't need an alignment and could care less about the road hazard plan- especially if it's going to cost me $200. WEG knows we can find cheaper tires somewhere that includes everything. So, beware- PepBoys is a rip-off!!

I have to get new tires this afternoon. Not just 2 new tires...nope, all 4....for an SUV. Um, yes, I have the worst luck with timing. Like I don't have enough to pay for over the next few months with everything that is going on. Now I have to have new tires, as well. Thank goodness PepBoys is offering a mail-in rebate for one free tire when you purchase 3. So, I guess it could be worse.
However, this means I will not be buying any unneccessary items for a while. Just the basics- groceries and gas- in addition to the millions of present I have to buy for various birthdays and events. I guess I will be having to put a stop to my current Hanky Panky buying addiction. I now have enough to last me through the week, so I guess it's as good a time as ever to curb that spending trap!
At least now my car will not shake when I hit 60 mph and I will not be afraid of a blow-out on the interstate due to thread-bare tires.

Man's (or Woman's) Best Friend

"A dog has no use for fancy cars or big homes or designer clothes. Status symbols mean nothing to him. A water-logged stick will do just fine. A dog judges others not by their color or creed or class but by who they are inside. A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his. " ~John Grogan

I just finished watching Marley and Me for the second time and am once again in a puddle of tears. Marley reminds me so much of Abe- although Abe isn't QUITE so destructive ;-) I'm not sure why I thought watching that movie again was a good idea. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but sheesh- now I am an emotional wreck.

I'm sure there are many of us who have lost a pet at some time or another. What an emotional and heart-wrenching thing it is, especially if you have had the pet for a long time. Probably one of the saddest days of my life was when my first dog, Ben, died. You see, I got Ben when I was five years old. He was a Shetland Sheepdog and one of the best dogs you could ever ask for. Being an only child, I often called him my brother. Once, I even told a lady at the grocery store that I had a brother and my mother made him stay in the yard. The lady was horrified, of course, and my mom assured her that my "brother" was, in fact, a dog. Despite my mom's assurance, I doggedly claimed that "No, mama, Ben is not a dog, he is my brother and you make him stay in the yard." Needless to say, that lady didn't stick around much longer.

But that goes to show how close I was to Ben. By the way, his whole name was Benjamin Bunny after the Beatrix Potter series, Peter Rabbit- clearly, I loved Beatrix Potter! (I was only five, remember)

There aren't many memories I have of my childhood that don't include Ben. One of his favorite things to do was run up the sliding board as I was climbing up the steps. Then, he would slide down with me, and run back up to meet me when I climbed up the steps once again. Ben was not only our pet, but my playmate when I was young.

So, at the age of 18, one week shy of leaving for college, when Ben finally reached the end and passed away, I was devastated. It was like losing my best friend. His health had been failing and we were just before having to put him to sleep when he drifted away on his own. I still remember clearly my dad wrapping Ben in our favorite "snuggie"- a hand-knitted afghan- to bury him down at our farm, where he used to love to run wild in his younger days. I left for college with a heavy heart, knowing that when I came home Ben would no longer be there to greet me.

I often think back to the times I had with Ben and how special they were since he was my first pet. I feel lucky to have had a dog so faithful to grow up with and, to this day, I miss that little Sheltie.

And now that I have had quite the good cry, I'm off to bed to rest up for the 9:00 service at church in the morning.

Wiggle, wiggle little worm

I think I have a worm...a tapeworm, that is. I have been ravenous since I woke up. I ate breakfast- yogurt, a banana, and a Poptart (don't judge, it was one of the high fiber ones, at least!). Then at 11:00- yes, that early- WEG and I went and ate lunch....I had all sides- butterbeans, black eyed peas, mashed potatoes, and macaroni.

So why, now, at 12:35 am I hungry again?

I am trying to hold off on snacking, but I may have to opt for at least a coke or something. This water I am drinking is not helping!!

Do you think this has anything to do with the fact that I am feeling slightly rough due to last night's dinner & a few..er many... drinks? I thought the result of that was dehydration, not hunger. It's like I haven't eaten in days- and this girl NEVER misses a meal, so that's certainly not the case!

I definitely won't last until 5:00 (especially since this day is drrragggiing).

Happy Friday!

**ETA- I made it until 2:30 and just ate the other Poptart from my breakfast pack. And I am drinking a coke- shame on me, but at least I'm not quite so ravenous now!!

Queen Emily

Sweet Carolina Bride also tagged me as a Queen of Awe-Summmm! I didn't put the graphic up last time, so there you go :-) Thanks, SCB!!

Mo-mo-mo-mo-mo-tivation

Do y'all know that cheer? We've got the mo-mo-mo-mo-mo-tivation; got the giddy-up, giddy-up determination. We've got it- together.
Yeah, I was a cheerleader in high school so I am full of corny cheers (and if I had a picture from my time as a cheerleader I'd show you so we could all get a good laugh).

Unfortunately, though, I am NOT full of any motivation or inspiration for blogging posts! You can probably tell from my lack of posts lately! I don't know what is wrong with me. I feel like I have bored the heck out of y'all with my posts about all of my upcoming events, but beyond that, there's not much else on my mind these days! I need some inspiration!!

Maybe I will be struck with a fabulous idea here soon, but if you think of anything in the meantime please let me know.

Tag, I'm it!

Katie at A Thrifty Girl's Guide to the Kitchen tagged me as a fellow Queen of All Things Awe-summm.

The rules are that I am supposed to list seven things that make me awe-summm and then pass the award on to seven other people who you think are fabulously awesummm.

So here it goes -
(1) I am the organizational Nazi- seriously- you need it planned, I'm your girl.
(2) I have a knowledge of sports that surpasses most of the population of women and many men- just don't ask me to play the sport, thank you very much.
(3) I'm from South Carolina...duh.
(4) I never get lost and my friends frequently call me for directions (hence the nicknames I am sometimes called- Garmette or EmEm)
(5) I am caring and, in most cases, put other's needs before my own
(6) I pull for the USC Gamecocks and not that other team from our state ;-)
(7) I know all the counties in SC and can sing them to the tune of Yankee Doodle- plus I can label them on a map...thank you to my 7th grade SC History teacher.

And I'm too lazy to tag. Deal with it.

And, Katie also tagged me for another little game with these rules:

1. Mention the person who nominated you (above).
2. List six unimportant things that make you happy
3. Tag six blogs, state the rules & notify them with a teeny comment on their blog.So here it goes!

(1) Lunches with WEG
(2) Getting to watch Dancing with the Stars uninterrupted.
(3) Getting off right at 5:00 and not a minute later
(4) folding the last load of laundry and knowing I'm done for a few days
(5) weekends with no set plans
(6) actually completing a recipe correctly- this is big for me!

And again, I'm lazy and not tagging. :-)

Running on Fumes

Before I start my post for today- I wanted to thank everyone for your suggestions for bachelorette items- I am going to look at all of those websites and report back on what I find and buy! Y'all are the best!!

I am definitely running on fumes this morning- I didn't get but about 2 hours sleep last night- just could not fall asleep! I have a donor meeting today, too, and my eyes are looking the part of my sleepless night- yikes! I just hope I make it through the day til 4:00 without falling asleep at my desk then it's home to Elloree for Mother's Day! I definitely just need a weekend to relax and hang out with my parents and go see my childhood best friend and her family- she has the cutest little boy and I'm his Aunt Em.

I'm also reallllly looking forward to eating some good ol' barbecue tonight from Orangeburg. You haven't lived until you'd have bbq with the "orange sauce"- not mustard, not vinegar, not ketchup, but a blend...mmm, it has spoiled me for all other bbq for the rest of my life, I think!!

I hope that everyone has a great Mother's Day and is able to celebrate with their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or children. To those of you who are mothers, I tip my hat- I know it's often times a thankless job, but one day your children will appreciate all you have sacrificed for them.

Here's a picture of me with my mom on Easter 2 years ago (Man how my hair has grown!):

Who can find a virtuous woman? She is far more precious than jewels...Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle. Her sons rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her: Many women are capable, but you surpass them all! Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. ~Proverbs 31:10, 25-30

Have a wonderful weekend, ladies!

Final Fling Before the Ring

Hey girls! I need to solicit your help (once again!)

I am planning a bachelorette party for my friend's wedding (I'm the maid of honor). My theme thus far has been "Last Fling Before the Ring." I am trying to find some cute cocktail napkins and plates to use that go along with the theme.
Here's the kicker- the bride-to-be dislikes pink! Have any of you tried to buy non-pink bachelorette items? Yeah, it's difficult because they assume all girls like hot pink, I think. I'd love some paper supplies that have a ring on them or something like that....no phallic symbols. Or, if I can't find anything ring-themed, then her colors are deep teal and brown.

Where are some good internet sites to find cute party supplies?? Google only finds the party superstores so I'm at a loss!!

It may not sound like much...

I have a new favorite song and everytime it comes on the radio it takes me back down roads lined with cotton to the only place I'll ever refer to as "back home" No matter how long I live in the "city," it will never be the small town of my youth that I know like the back of my hand. Elloree is like so many other small towns in the South and I'm sure the words of Jason Michael Carroll's "Where I'm From" could pull at a number of heartstrings, taking you back to a place where life is simpler- where your neighbor knows you by name.

Do these lyrics evoke any memories for you?

Where I'm From- Jason Michael Carroll

On a three hour flight from Memphis to LA
I was silently celebrating my first class upgrade
Laughing at my jeans and my boots
Beside those high dollar shoes and Armani suits
When the gentleman next to me said the drinks up here are free
So if you'd like, the first one can be on me
He said i'm headin back from business in New York and Rome
Tell me son, Where do you call home

I said I'm from the front pew of a wooden white church
A courthouse clock that still dont work
Where a man's word means everything
Where moms and dads were high school flings
Gave their children grandmother's maiden name Yes it may not sound like much
But its where I'm from

So we drank that round and then another
There wasn't a topic in this world we did not cover
He said I headed out west when I was barely 19
Just a kid chasing my dreams
I said I'm flying out here to pick up my big brother
He's been fighting the cancer they discovered
But he called last night and said I think this is the end
So come take me home to my family and my friends

Where the quarterback dates the homecoming queen
The truck's a Ford and the tractor's green
And Amazing Grace is what we sing
Well there's a county fair every fall
And your friends are there no matter when you call
Yeah It may not sound like much but it's where I'm from

And as we stood to claim the bags we checked
He said I'll pray for your brother and did I mention that
Italian suits haven't always been my style
See I was quarterback of my high school team
We took state back in '63
And my wife, she's still my homecoming queen

Cause I'm from the front pew of a wooden white church
A courthouse clock that still don't work
Where a man's word means everything
Where moms and dads were high school flings
Gave their children grandmother's maiden name
Yes it may not sound like much
I said it may not sound like much
but it's where I'm from
it's where I'm from
it's where I'm from
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound......

Crossing the line

**Warning: This is a religious rant and may offend some people. I apologize in advance if it offends you, but I feel I must get some feedback.

Is there such a thing as taking your religion too far? Perhaps shoving it down someone's throat is a bit too much? Don't get me wrong, I believe in witnessing to people and spreading God's word, but I think there is an imaginary line that can be crossed when you say too much, do too much, and get to the point where you are forcing your beliefs on someone.

Saturday night some friends and I went to dinner at a restaurant in an area of town called Five Points. Five Points is the college area, complete with bars that are mostly frequented by college kids. Although the bars are mostly the college-aged crowd, there are quite a few good restaurants, one of which we dined at, and we decided after dinner we'd walk across the street to one of the bars. Well, outside on the corner were a group of people I generally refer to as "bible beaters" (Urban Dictionary says a bible beater is one who takes his religion to radical extremes and usually knocks on your door or stands on a corner trying to get people to convert to xyz religion) The man below resembles one of the men from Saturday night (just so you get the idea of what I am talking about):

They yell at people walking by, hold up signs that say things like, "the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is life eternal." Now, don't get me wrong, I fully agree with this verse. However, I do not think that their style of witnessing is effective. They're generally yelling at drunk college kids walking from bar to bar. Often times, people retaliate and yell some not-so-nice things. I usually try to ignore them. I am a Christian and I feel like if I am enjoying a few drinks in moderation, I am not committing a mortal sin. My parents always told me that if I was of legal age and partook in a few alcoholic beverages in moderation that was okay (and we're Southern Baptist, too- which some may disagree and say no alcohol at all, but this was how I was raised). I'm not saying that my beliefs are the right ones or the wrong ones, but I don't need someone standing on the corner shoving a Bible in my face and basically implying that I am going to Hell for even being in a bar.

The worst part of it all, though, and the part that really made me irate was the fact that at 10:00 on a Saturday night in an area filled with bars and people drinking, there was a child holding up one of their signs. If I had to guess the little boy was about 8 or 9. Now, if these people are so moral and righteous, then one would think they would have more parenting skills than to use their child in this way...at 10:00 at night when he should have been in bed resting for church the next morning. There is no way I would ever take a child and submit him to the kinds of things I know people yell at them. I am sure there were things that a child should not hear, and to have a kid out on the corner in an area filled with bars seems negligent to me. I know they were trying to use the child to make people listen, but I find this to be just as bad, if not worse, than people partaking in a few alcoholic beverages.

I was outraged, to say the least. I, of course, did not say anything, but it has really been under my skin since Saturday night.

What are your thoughts about this? Do you feel that these people crossed a line?

In the Merry Month of May

I can't believe May has arrived- April seemed to fly and I suspect May will, as well! In the month of May I am so busy! I have:

  • a hooding ceremony for my good friend, Carolyn, who has completed Pharmacy School- YAY CAROLYN!!
  • quick visit to see my friend, Joy, and her little boy, Sawyer when they are at home for Mother's Day
  • Mother's Day with my mom in Elloree
  • an appointment to have a girl play with my hair to try out different hairstyles for the weddings I am in
  • Alumni Reunion at work
  • USC v. UGA baseball game
  • Memorial Day
  • Bachelorette Party in Charleston for Julie!

Whew, busy, busy!! Before we all know it, it will be June and summer will be in full swing- time to get my tan on so I'm not pasty for all of these upcoming events!!

And hopefully this time next year I will be anticipating a trip to Costa Rica.... Holly, let's start making that a reality ;-)
